Curbing the porn menace
S. T. Arasu
Much had been said and written on the current topic of the day. First
of all, let me wholeheartedly thank you, for publishing, a very
valuable, impressive, well analysed article, on this vital, delicate
topic, under the headline, ‘Keep your child safe on the internet -
dangerous sexual predators are online’, written absolutely well, by the
Australian Solicitor/Barrister (Australian resident) Mr. Dinesh
Iriyagolle Weerakkody, in the reader’s special debate column of the
Daily News dated August 20, 2008, that I had the privilege of reading
through with great pleasure and utmost interest! Whilst appreciating the
commendable masterpiece article and welcoming the marvellous suggestions
put forward, by the writer in question, may I be permitted to pen a few
words briefly, here, in support of the said writer. - Hats off to the
writer.
In my humble opinion, I do think, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had
taken the right steps indeed, (a timely and appropriate action), as a
national issue, to block the porn websites on the internet service in
our country, in order to protect our children and minors especially,
from inappropriate website materials, and also, those who want unlimited
access to the internet service would have to pay the ISPs, as an extra
charges. Well done, President.
The children of today, are our future masters and leaders of our
motherland. It’s the bounden duty of all parents, elders and teachers
who should take the full responsibility of our treasures, the children,
to lead or guide them in the correct path, to be very useful patriotic
citizens.
In this connection, they should be very sharp, on alert, to
supervise, or assist and guide the innocent children in the right path,
or footing when they buy the computers with the introduction of the
internet, for their homes and schools usage.
In fact, the internet specially offers, to all concerned (young or
old), include text images and videos, or movies, footages, etc, and the
contents ranges from information to entertainment, sports and so on, no
doubt. Thus, parents, elders and teachers should be extremely watchful,
or careful, to monitor or control (select) over the right tools,
materials and facilities, that they bring into their homes and schools,
for their children handling independently (work out of the
computer/internet).
The pornographic contents are extremely detrimental, as today, we do
observe and understand that the adults with sexual interests in children
(from all parts of the world), have used chat rooms and interactive
areas on line, to make contact with and befriend the young innocent
ones, then persuade and manipulate them to meet up, where they have
always been misled and thoroughly abused, or rather bullied by all
force, or compulsion so badly.
Undoubtedly, a sad, tragic situation crops up, if the right, or
proper step is not taken by them early on time, or at the start itself,
in order, ‘to nip in the bud’ of such ugly positions, that would
entirely spoil the involved children’s careers dragged to the darkness,
without any better future.
Of course, the State should be the guardian angel and to protect them
from all evil, hardships, difficulties and uneasiness.
I do feel that the present laws on this delicate matter are
inadequate at all. Before I wrap up this submission, I do humbly appeal
to the President of our country to take the next necessary vital step,
to order the respective authorities concerned, to prohibit the
pornographic literature, porn books, magazines and DVDs, that are in
wide circulation in the market. Furthermore, the cinema show theatres -
the x-rated movies which were censored films (strictly for adults only),
that the children (teenagers) view as well, should be checked or
monitored by the State.
It’s reckoned, that this is a national issue that has to be solved
soon, or sooner the possible.
