Air Force clinch Uva Centenary Cup
The Air Force Rugby Club Diyatalawa clinched the Uva Centenary Cup by
beating the Uva Club (The Planters Association) by 20 points (4 tries)
to 5 (1 try), played at the Vincent Dias Stadium Badulla recently in
front of a capacity crowd.
The gutty Air Force team led by Wing Comm. Sanjaya Fernando played a
grand game who confronted a do or die Uva rugby outfit led by burly
former St. Peter's, Havelocks and skipper of Uva team 1991 Nelantha
Silva. The try scorers for Air Force were: Wing three Quarter S.
Lakshitha 2 tries while flankers A. Rajaguru and P. Kodagoda 1 try each,
the only try for Uva was planted by No. 8 'Tanker' A. Pieris. All
players who played for Uva were planters from different areas of Uva.
This historic match was organised by the Planters Association from
Uva Province.
The chief guest was Lalith Obeysekere (Director/CEO Balangoda
Plantation Ltd, Ratnapura) while the guest of honour was Viren de Mel
(Director Group of Companies, Badulla). |
