22 years jail for impersonation

Colombo High Court Judge Sunil Rajapakse yesterday sentenced an office assistant of the Attorney General's Department to 22 years Rigorous Imprisonment when he pleaded guilty for using vehicles from a rent a car service appearing as a Chief Inspector of Police.

Attorney General Department filed five separate indictments with 11 counts against S.A.D. Wimalasiri for urging J.M. Jayathunga, the owner of a rent a car service to give him vehicles for transport impersonating as a Police CI in October and November in 2004. The Court imposed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty.

At the outset of the trial the accused pleaded not guilty and in the progress of the trial he pleaded guilty.

State Counsel Shanil Kularatne appeared for the prosecution.
