Polls victory clear endorsement of Govt's policies - WP Governor
Mohammed Naalir
Western Province Governor and the President of the Joint Council of
Trade Unions (JCTU) Alavi Mowlana yesterday said that people of
Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provinces gave their verdict last
Saturday for the Government and the Security Forces to continue military
operations against the LTTE to liberate the people living in the grip of
LTTE tyranny and to usher peace.
Governor Mowlana speaking at his Office auditorium said that the
Joint JCTU will never take part in the proposed strikes of the JVP.
Mowlana paid his gratitude to the thousands of working class for
casting their votes for the betel leaf and helped the UPFA's victory.
"When we tabled the problems of the working class a temporary salary
increase of Rs. 1,000 was granted to public sector employees until a
permanent solution is found to salary related problems on par with the
increase of the cost of living in keeping with the market changes," he
said.
"Mowlana noted that not only the local community but also the
international community too have recognised the victory of the UPFA at
the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council elections".
"Without any reasonable cause, the trade unions led by the UNP and
the JVP demanded for a Rs. 5000 increment at a time the Government is
taking forward a giant development drive throughout the country while
granting enough facilities to the working class," the Western Province
Governor said.
"Our people are intelligent enough to identify the good elements and
the mischievous elements," Mowlana added. Secretary of the Central
Council of Sri Lanka Secretary Somaratne Chandrasiri said that realising
the present situation and the President's patriotic move to eradicate
terrorism, the trade unions which held discussions with the President
worked genuinely for a UPFA victory at the Sabaragamuwa and North
Central Provincial Council Elections.
He said it is the duty of the patriotic citizens to support the
President's endeavour to restore peace and prosperity in our country.
President of Public Service Trade Union Federation W.H. Piyadasa said
Sri Lanka is at a decisive stage in our history. Even though the
Opposition carried out a huge propaganda campaign it ended in utter
failure with the comfortable victory of the Government.
