The local creativity, talents and the tradition of photo art should
be viewed by a new pair of glasses on a view point beyond the
perception. There are many local photographs that have been exhibited
worldwide in the past.
Another step has been taken by the Graphic and the Communication
designing students of the University of Moratuwa, to showcase the
talents, traditions and cultural values of the local photographic
industry on a national level this year too.
The Graphic Students Circle of the University of Moratuwa announced
the relaunch of the photographic contest and exhibition ‘Aperture 2008’.
Aperture 2008 is the fifth photographic exhibition organised by the
Graphic and Communication Design Faculty. Student Chairperson of
Aperture 2008 Exhibition Committee Lakruwani Wimalaratna said
applications are out now and the closing date for entries is tomorrow
(19).
Candidates can collect the application forms from the University of
Moratuwa and Ninehearts outlets.
She said, the exhibition will be held at Harold Peiris Gallery,
Lionel Wendt for three days starting from 29th to 31st of August at the
YMBA - Kandy on 6th and 7th of September, Kurunegala YMBA on 12th and
13th of September and Municipal Council Gallery, Galle on 20th and 21st.
“The theme of Aperture 2008 is nature of the island and will be
assessed on the creativity and valuing the cultural identity of the
pictures. Our objective is to produce creative and sensitive
photographers, who can capture beyond our perspective,” Lakruwani
Wimalaratna said.
Photography is an art that discloses a wide meaning of a snap shot.
There are many local photographic talents hidden in the bush. Its an art
that shows the creative and innovative view of an object within the
borders of a photographer’s screen. An admirable generation of a
photograph is the thought of a photographer.
The local talents and traditions in photography should be refined by
competitions and training to create the outstanding standard and quality
in the industry.
This sort of contests in the photography art will buff up the talents
and the innovation of the photographers.
The Graphic Students Circle of the University of Moratuwa is planning
to set a platform to the local photographic professionals on an
international level next year. This will further improve the quality and
the standard of the photographs produced locally.
Lakruwini said that the division and the categories open for Aperture
2008 are open for professionals and to the people holding a professional
degree in the field of photography.
Commercial is for the people in the field of promotion and
advertising and amateur for the undergraduate level participants and to
the new arrivals for the field. Each division will consist of
monochrome, colour and digitally manipulated categories.
This event is introduced in 2004. This event is organised by the 3rd
and 4th year students of the Graphic and Communication Designing Faculty
of the University of Moratuwa every year.
The Art and Design Section of University of Moratuwa consists Graphic
and Communication Design, Jewellery design, Fashion design, Furniture
design and ceramic design segments.
“This is a four year degree course and during this period the
students are strictly asked to maintain the cultural identity while
creating innovative and functional designs of international quality and
standards,” Lakruwini said.
