Con cop nabbed

Peradeniya police on Sunday arrested an ex-policeman who was stalking
in Kandy and the adjacent areas in a police constable uniform.
The suspect was arrested when he was staying at a temple in the
Hindagala area. Investigations revealed that the suspect who once served
as a police constable attached to the Borella police station had
subsequently got absent without official leave.
The police has also discovered that the suspect is a resident of
Uhana, Ampara. Peradeniya OIC Upali Naranpanawa said investigations were
under way to ascertain whether the suspect is involved in any illegal
activities.
Water interruption

The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority will open sluice gates of Polgolla
tank today from 6.00 a.m. to 12 p.m.
As a result water supply to certain areas is to be affected. The
areas affected are Polgolla, Katugastota, Akurana, Alawathugoda,
Nugawela, Gogangoda, Halbluwa , Kulugammana, Barigama and Uguressapitiya.
The Water Supply and Drainage Board requests consumers to store water
for consumption during the said period.
Infant’s body found in Sevanagala

Sevanagala Police on a tip off recovered a body of an infant aged
about five days dumped in a lavatory pit at Samagipura Sevanagala last
Saturday.
Embilipitiya Chief Magistrate E.A.K.D. Epitawala visited the scene
and ordered the Police to arrest the suspects and produce them before
the Courts.
Sevanagala Police are investigating.

Buddhist talk
Dr. Hema Gunatilake will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on
“Why are the Americans attracted to Buddhism” at a meeting of the
Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, August 9 at 4.30 p.m. at the
Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
A.C.W.B.C. honours its founders
The All Ceylon Women’s Buddhist Congress will honour its “Founding
Mothers” at its Founders’ Day commemoration on the 60th anniversary of
its inauguration on Saturday, August 9 at the ACWBC Headquarters founded
60 years ago by Mrs. Juliet Kulatilaka Jayawardena and a band of
energetic Buddhist women who gathered at “Hewa Court”, Edinburgh
Crescent established the All Ceylon Women’s Buddhist Association (its
original name).
The organisation had an auspicious start with a galaxy of eminent
Buddhist ladies as its founder members.
Among those were Lady Evadne de Silva (the first President), Lady
Chrisobel Rajapakse and Mrs. Juliet Jayawardena (Joint Secretaries),
Senator Cissy Cooray, Lady Laura de Silva, Mrs. J. R. Jayawardena, Mrs.
H. H. Basnayake, Mrs. G. P. Malalasekera, Mrs. H. W. Amarasuriya, Mrs.
R. S. S. Gunawardena, Mrs. Rajah Hewavitarne, Mrs. Daisy Seneviratne and
Mrs. F. Gunaratne.
The ACWBC has, since then, expanded its activities and also provides
paying residential accommodation for ladies, a Physiotherapy Unit for
elders and the handicapped and a Hospice to care for the terminally ill.
Several other projects are on-going, among them those for Catering
Training and Self-Employment, Handloom Weaving and Handicrafts,
Prisoners’ Welfare and most significantly, an Action Committee for the
Protection of the Buddha Sasana (especially Buddhist sites in the North
and East).
Islamic lectures
Islamic Jurisprudence lectures will be conducted by Al Haj Moulavi M.
Rizvie Mu’min (Rashaadi) at the Ar Rashaadi Arabic College, Colombo
Markus, Lukmanjee Square, Grandpass, on Mondays, commencing August 8,
immediately after Isha prayers at Al- Ma’hadul Bukhariyul Kadirie
Thakiya (Jamiul Falah Jumma Mosque) 178, Layard’s Broadway, Colombo 14 a
news release issued by the Al Haj M.S.M. Hallaji , Chief Trustee of the
Mosque states.
Echoes of Heaven
A choral singing programme by the Choir of St Sebestian’s College,
Moratuwa in aid of their chapel fund will be held at the BMICH, Colombo
on Friday, August 8 at 6 p.m.
The show is organised by the 93rd Batch of Old Boys of the College.

The Annual General Meeting of the Past Pupils Association of Ferguson
High School (Colombo Branch) will be held on Sunday, August 17 at Villa

Beginning of Shaban
The Islamic month of Shaban Hijri 1429 commenced from August 3
evening. The night of Bara’th will be observed on August 17 evening.
Praise and worship programme
The Deborah Fellowship will conduct a praise and worship programme
titled ‘Shekinah’ on August 8 from 5 p.m. onwards at the Elphinstone
Theatre, Maradana to pray for peace in Sri Lanka. |
