Fire at IDP camp

Some 150 families living in a camp for internally displaced people in Vavuniya district were affected by a fire, officials said.

S. Shanmugam, district secretary Vavuniya said that the fire broke out in the Poonthottam camp around 9 a.m.

"Two people aged 70 and 56 were injured and all the belongings of thepeople in the camp were destroyed. They were living in seven cottages," Shanmugam said. Shanmugam said an electricity short circuit was being suspectedas the reason for the fire which was completely put out with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the police.
