Abductor arrested

Maradana Police yesterday arrested a youth who alleged abducted a businessman.

According to Inspector of Police Jayawardene the main suspect, a youth aged 23 was taken into custody along with the three wheeler used in the abduction by a special police team at Malwana yesterday.

The abduction was carried out at gun point opposite the Maradana Police station on May 13 by a gang led by by the youth.

The businessman had then been taken to a place in Grandpass and severely assaulted before removing all his valuables.

The gang had then released him after obtaining a promise to pay Rs. 500,000 ransom to prevent further harassment.

The money was to be delivered the next day.

However the businessman had proceeded to the Maradana Police and related his ordeal, IP Gunewardene said.

According to the IP the gang is suspected of being involved in a number of abduction and extortion attempts.
