The programme was conducted by Nutrition Specialist and Senior
Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, Dr. Angela De Silva recently at
the school premises.
Understanding the importance of a healthy diet for improvement of
growth and for physical well-being, this programme comes as an extension
of the nutrition programme already implemented by HSBC since 2005.
In addition, the existing nutrition programme of providing free meals
to students was further improved on this day with the inclusion of many
nutritional food items such as milk, string hoppers (made of rice
flour), gram and bananas. This also coincided with ‘Nutrition Month’
declared by the Ministry of Health.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Angela De Silva advised the parents on
how they can provide a well-balanced meal at a nominal cost by using
produce they can grow or easily find in the local community. A key
spokesperson of the Bank stated, ‘it is important to understand the
nutrition value of food consumed as it will help nurture good eating
habits.
This will also foster an understanding of how to make use of the
produce that could be easily grown in the households and how each
student could balance their meals in order to improve their productivity
and mental and physical concentration’.
The Principal of Tirivanaketiya College, G M O Gunathilaka said,
‘HSBC have been with us for over four years and have extended their
utmost support to the School by funding the refurbishment of our school
buildings following the 2003 floods in Ratnapura.
Today’s programme has proved to be valuable for all students and
parents.
HSBC launched the school’s first nutrition programme in 2005, where a
glass of milk was given to students twice a week.
In August 2006, milk, buns, bananas, and nutrition supplements were
also provided to students of the school.
The new nutrition programme was introduced upon receiving positive
results of the previous programmes that benefited many students,
encouraging them to attend school regularly, resulting in their all
round development.
