General Election only at proper time - UPFA
COLOMBO: The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday stated
that a General Election will only be held at the proper time.
Responding to a statement by UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake
that the Government should hold a General Election instead of PC polls,
a UPFA communique questioned Attanayake as to why Provincial Councils
Polls should not be held and also why the UNP was reluctant to face it.
“Similarly, the UPFA questions the basis on which the UNP demands a
General Election before the due date while it blames the Government for
holding Provincial Council elections well before the expiry of the due
date,” the communique added.
It said: “The UNP which was defeated at the 2005 Presidential
election, said it would form a Government before Sinhala New Year in
2006.
The UNP again said after the Eastern Provincial election, that it was
the beginning of the end of the UPFA.
The UNP General Secretary who finds it difficult to find a candidate
for the Chief Ministership talks of a general election. This shows like
his party leader, the General Secretary himself lives in a dreamland,
beyond reality.
The NCP and Sabaragamuwa Chief Ministers had to dissolve their
Provincial Councils and go for elections when the JVP along with the UNP
attempted to dislodge the Provincial Councils.
To counter that cowardly act and to get a fresh public mandate the
Chief Minister decided to dissolve the Provincial Councils.
In place of UNP’s cowardly politics such as ‘Fransiskukaranaya’
practised in 1990s to ‘disappear’ MPs and retain power by all means, the
UPFA has gone before the people. That thousands of UNP supporters at the
grass roots level leave their party and rally round the UPFA proves they
respect the political decision of the UPFA.
The UPFA is resolute that it will secure a complete victory in the
two Provincial Council elections as well as in the General Election to
be held at the right time.”
UPFA to hold 1,317 public rallies
The UPFA will launch an extensive propaganda network covering
Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts for the
forthcoming NCP and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils election.
Altogether 1,317 public rallies will be organised. The President will
participate in four public rallies.
Responsibility has been cast on the grassroots level membership to
make the move a success. |
