Jumbo kills soldier on duty

A soldier on duty at the Victoria hydro-power station was killed by a
marauding wild jumbo yesterday.
The victim is B.D.W. Karunadasa from Rikillagaskada. The wild
elephant was later shot dead by another soldier on duty.
Launch of two books
The Buddha and His Teaching in Brief authored by Ven. Dutuwewe
Lankananda Thera and Aprakata Buddha Lokaya authored by Ven. Pundit
Missaka Kamalasiri thera will be launched on July 12 at 3.00 p.m. at
Dharma Vijaya Foundation, Colombo 7.
Ven. Prof. Devalegama Medhananda Nayaka Thera, Department of Buddhist
Studies, Kelaniya University will deliver the keynote address.
Benedicts OBU AGM
The 10th Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys' Union of St.
Benedict's College, Colombo 13 will be held on July 6 at 10.30 a.m.
preceded by Holy Mass at 9.30 a.m.
The meeting will be followed by the Fellowship Lunch at the Old Bens
Sports Club from 11.30 p.m. onwards.

New Islamic month
The Colombo Grand Mosque announced yesterday that it was decided to
commence the Islamic month of Rajab Hijri 1429 from yesterday evening.
Title deeds for landless
Title deeds for 150 landless people in the Doluwa divisional
secretary's division, Gampola will be granted at a ceremony to be held
under the patronage of Plantation Industries Minister, D. M. Jayaratne.
Krishnamurti talk
A recorded public talk on "The relationship of health to freedom"
delivered by the late Indian sage J. Krishnamurti will be replayed at
the Krishnamurti Study Centre, Duwa Road, Beddagana, Kotte at 10.30 a.m.
on July 06. The event is sponsored by the Krishnamurti Centre, Sri Lanka
Inc.
Mobile service
The Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Ministry will
conduct a mobile service from July 5 to 12 in the Kegalle district on
the instructions of Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development,
Minister Arumugam Thondaman.
Lake House correspondent's van stolen

A gang of thieves stole Kurunegala Lake House correspondent Ariyapala
Wansathilaka's 250/9513 white and silver colour Dolpin Toyota vehicle on
Thursday at about 9 p.m. from near the Angangala temple at Kurunegala.
He has lodged a complaint to the Kurunegala police crime detection
bureau.
The robbers have used a duplicate key to steal the vehicle with some
important documents.
Police are investigating the incident directed by the Kurunegala
police crime detection bureau.
Any information could be produced to the Kurunegala police on

Death of former ANCL Accountant
The death occurred of Harvey Frizil Gomes of Idama, Moratuwa, a
former accountant attached to the ANCL (Lake House) Accounts Department
for 30 years. He was 86. He was a past pupil of Prince of Wales College,
Moratuwa. His remains are lying at his residence at No. 39. Lady Evelyn
de Soysa Road, Idama, Moratuwa. Funeral service and burial will take
place at the Holy Emmanuel Church, Moratuwa on Saturday (July 5)
afternoon.
Lanka’s oldest engineer dies at 104

Sri Lanka’s oldest Engineer who was attached to the
Telecommunications Department during 1920s, Edmund Charles Wijekoon
passed away on Tuesday at the age of 104. Wijekoon had joined the
Department in 1923 as a District Inspector of Telecommunications and
retired as a Senior Engineer in 1962.
During his 39 year unblemished career in the Telecommunications
sector, Wijekoon served in Colombo and Kandy telecommunication offices.
It was during his time Sri Lanka started the first radio transmission
station on a directive of the then Chief Telecommunication Engineer, Mr.
Harbour. The first transmission station was established in Welikada and
he was in charge of the Welikada Transmission Centre until retired from
service in 1962.
Ex ANCL employee celebrates 58th Wedding Anniversary
C.D.F. (Freddy) Weerasuriya and his wife Heraliyawala Liyanage Milred
Violet Peiris of Nugegoda, who were married on July 5,1951, celebrate 58
years of happy wedded life.
The couple has only one child, a daughter and a son-in-law and now
they have two grand sons and two great grand daughters. Freddy
Weerasuriya was born on October 10, 1923 in Wattala and received his
education at St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena.
Before joining Lake House in 1947, having obtained a Diploma in
Animal Husbandry, worked as an overseer at the Government Livestock Farm
in Polonnaruwa from 1945 to 1947. |
