Positions came after Richard Pathirana - PM

The demise of Dr. Richard Pathirana, who was an expert electoral organiser, Parliamentary colleague, seasoned and exemplary politician and a sincere human being is an unbearable loss, said Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka yesterday in a condolence message on the death of Dr. Richard Pathirana.

The message said that out of all ministerial portfolios held by Dr. Pathirana, education was most outstanding.

“Making use of his experience as a teacher he increased teachers’ salaries in an unprecedented manner and brought about vast changes in the education system.

As a Parliamentarian he associated closely with all Members and made a powerful voice with a sense of team spirit so much so that he became immensely popular among people not only in the South but in the whole country.

The enormous services he rendered in the development field to Galle district on an electoral basis will be remembered forever.

Dr. Pathirana who dedicated nearly three decades of his life towards the welfare of the people was a sincere, forthright and popular politician with great oratorical skills. He never sought positions but positions always came after him due to his skill, dexterity and dedication to service.

He had no political or personal enemies because he was a man of one word. If not for his illness he would have been able to serve the country for many more years.

May Dr. Richard Pathirana attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.”
