Mahanama outplay strong Joes

Mahanama came back with a vengeance to avenge their defeat in the league, when they beat St. Joseph’s by 24 points (3 tries, 2 penalties, 1 drop goal) to 17 (2 tries 1 penalty try) in their Milo President’s Trophy knock out schools quarter final rugger match played at the Royal Sports Complex yesterday.

The Joes led 17-11 at the breather, but Mahanama playing with better cohesion with their back division and forwards combining together, gave a fine display to find a place in the semi finals.

For the winners full back Mithun Shamil (2) tries, winger Chatura Shanaka (1) scored the tries while centre Ramesh Gunawardena dropped a goal and Mahesh Eranga put over the penalty.

For the Joes Navin Abeyratne scored both tries and also the penalty.

Petes an easy win

In another quarter final game between St. Peter’s and Nalanda, the Peterites trounced a hapless Nalanda outfit to the tune of 58 points (4 goals, 6 tries) to 6 (2 penalties) win at the Royal Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

The winners led 27-3 at half time. The Nalandians could not do much to put the brakes on the strong Peterites who were minus some of their regular players. Winger Jude Canute (3), skipper Poornaka Delpachitra (3) Rashitha Pieris, Dilshan Paul, Lahiru Udayanga and Keith Gurusinghe scored a try each. Amila Fernando put over the conversions. For the losers Madusanka Sandaruwan dropped a kick and put over the penalty.
