Parties vie for Sabaragamuwa, NCP supremacy

Nominations deadline today:

COLOMBO: With only 24 hours remaining for the nominations deadline several key political parties yesterday submitted nominations for both Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces including the UPFA, the UNP and the JVP.

According to election authorities in the Ratnapura district which comes under Sabaragamuwa province four political parties had handed over their nominations including United National Party (UNP), Upcountry Peoples Front (UPF), New Left Front (NLF) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in addition to three independent groups.

The UPFA has nominated Mohan Saliya Ellawala as its team leader for the Ratnapura area.

According to sources the name of popular actor Ranjan Ramanayake who recently voiced his desire to be his party’s Chief Ministerial Nominee for Sabaragamuwa too figured in the UNP list.

However, the UNP yesterday was tightlipped about their choice of CM candidate for Sabaragamuwa, with one source claiming they would keep the position open and in case of victory would appoint the candidate who obtained the highest preferential votes. Out of 27 eligible candidates from each party, the Ratnapura district is set to appoint 24 members to the Sabaragamuwa PC.

According to election authorities in the Kegalle district seven political parties and five independent groups had handed over their list of nominees by noon yesterday.

The UPFA, UNP, JVP, UPF, NLF, NDF and Lanka Maha Sabha had submitted nominations along with five other independent groups for Kegalle which is set to appoint 18 candidates out of 21 eligible from each party.

In the Anuradhapura district only two political parties had handed over their nominations by noon yesterday, the United Socialist Front (USP) and National Development Front (NDF).

Out of 24 eligible nominees the Anuradhapura district would appoint 21 members to the North Central Provincial Council.
