Parties vie for Sabaragamuwa, NCP supremacy

COLOMBO: With only 24 hours remaining for the nominations
deadline several key political parties yesterday submitted nominations
for both Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces including the UPFA,
the UNP and the JVP.
According to election authorities in the Ratnapura district which
comes under Sabaragamuwa province four political parties had handed over
their nominations including United National Party (UNP), Upcountry
Peoples Front (UPF), New Left Front (NLF) and the Janatha Vimukthi
Peramuna (JVP) in addition to three independent groups.
The UPFA has nominated Mohan Saliya Ellawala as its team leader for
the Ratnapura area.
According to sources the name of popular actor Ranjan Ramanayake who
recently voiced his desire to be his party’s Chief Ministerial Nominee
for Sabaragamuwa too figured in the UNP list.
However, the UNP yesterday was tightlipped about their choice of CM
candidate for Sabaragamuwa, with one source claiming they would keep the
position open and in case of victory would appoint the candidate who
obtained the highest preferential votes. Out of 27 eligible candidates
from each party, the Ratnapura district is set to appoint 24 members to
the Sabaragamuwa PC.
According to election authorities in the Kegalle district seven
political parties and five independent groups had handed over their list
of nominees by noon yesterday.
The UPFA, UNP, JVP, UPF, NLF, NDF and Lanka Maha Sabha had submitted
nominations along with five other independent groups for Kegalle which
is set to appoint 18 candidates out of 21 eligible from each party.
In the Anuradhapura district only two political parties had handed
over their nominations by noon yesterday, the United Socialist Front (USP)
and National Development Front (NDF).
Out of 24 eligible nominees the Anuradhapura district would appoint
21 members to the North Central Provincial Council. |
