JVP in signature campaign

JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath yesterday said the party has organised a signature collecting campaign on July 9 demanding the Government to implement the 17th Amendment.

Addressing a new briefing in Colombo, he stressed the necessity and the importance of reimplementing the 17th Amendment. "Establishing an Independent Election Commission and an Independent Police Commission is crucial at the moment to affirm real democracy of the country," he said.

He said they have insisted on the Government to establish an independent commission to look into attacks on media personnel and media institutions. Addressing the media at Sri Lanka foundation Institute (SLFI) Herath said that Government has a great responsibility to protect the media personnel and media institutions but it has failed to do so.

He said that the right of the people to get correct information has also been violated.
