Over 700 UNP, JVP supporters join SLFP

Members and supporters of the UNP and JVP in the North Central Province disillusioned with their party leadership and policies have started crossing over to the SLFP in droves to ensure a victory for the SLFP led alliance at the forthcoming Provincial Council Elections.

Over 500 UNP members and supporters led by Mrs. Chandra Aanniarachchi, a former UNP candidate who contested the last North Central Provincial Council election renounced their party allegiance and joined the SLFP yesterday. Mrs. Wanniarachchi said they would soon seek SLFP membership.

A group of 200 ardent JVP supporters from the Mihintale electorate met Petroleum Resources Minister and Mihintale Chief SLFP Organiser Duminda Dissanayake on Wednesday and pledged support to the candidature of former Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.

Former Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake addressing them said the victory of the SLFP led alliance at the forthcoming election was a foregone conclusion looking at the way even supporters of Opposition parties were rallying round the SLFP.
