Chopper fired at, lands safely

A helicopter engaged in logistics facilitation for the Arugam Bay bridge opening yesterday came under fire between Ampara and Arugam Bay.

“When the pilot realised that the fuel tank has been damaged by the firing he made an emergency landing in Arugam Bay,” Air Force spokesman Wing Commander J. Nanayakkara said.

No one was hurt in the incident and the helicopter has suffered no damage except for the fuel tank.


Annual awards ceremony

Samudradevi Girl’s school of Nugegoda which celebrated its 93rd anniversary this year, will be held its annual awards ceremony on Friday, July 4 at 9.00 am under the patronage of Western Province Chief Minister Reginold Cooray.

The 104th Annual General Meeting of the St. Benedict’s College Old Boys’ Union will be held on July 6 at the College Hall at 10.30 a.m. preceded by Holy Mass at 9.30 a.m.

Film shows

The Cultural Section of the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran starting from today will screen Iranian films weekly at their auditorium at No. 06, Sir Earnest de Silva Mawatha, Colombo 07.

‘The Travellers’ directed by Bahra Beyza will be screened today . The story is wound around a young girl preparing for her marriage in Tehran. Her elder sister who has been living in a provincial town sets out for the capital to join the wedding party.

But she gets killed in a car accident and the wedding ceremony is turned into a mourning ceremony. Under the new circumstances nobody gives any thought to the face of the young couple.


Prison guards examination

The re-scheduled competitive examination for the recruitment of prison guards to the Department of Prisons will be held on July 6 at 215 examination centres countrywide said, Deputy Examinations Commissioner S.H.M. Shafeek.

Nearly 25,000 candidates will sit this examination and admission cards have already been sent to them by post, he said. This examination which was earlier scheduled for June 7 was postponed due to the flood situation.


B.S. Perera commemoration ceremony

The 26th B.S. Perera commemoration ceremony organised by the National Film Corporation under the instructions of NFC Chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa will be held at the NFC Cinema hall today at 6 pm said NFC Advisor T.M. Sanghadasa who is handling the arrangements.

A highlight will be the B.S. Perera memorial oration delivered by veteran actor Joe Abeywickrma. The Sinhala film ‘Ching Ching Nona’ featuring late comedian B.S. Perera, Dr. Gamini Fonseka, Farina Lye, Shanthi Lekha, Freddy Silva and Joseph Seneviratne will be screened under the auspices of Tissa Nagodavithane.


New appointment

P. Swarnarajah has been appointed as Batticaloa High Court Judge with immediate effect. He was also a past student of St. Michael's College, Batticaloa
