Defending champions Kandy Sports Club and Havelocks Sports Club
scored resounding wins over Sri Lanka Army (53-0) and Police SC (41-12)
while the formidable CR and FC were held to a 15-all draw by a gallant
CH and FC outfit in the Caltex ‘A’ division league rugby matches played
over the weekend.
Kandy Sports Club fielding a makeshift outfit with several talented
youngsters turned in a dazzling display of open rugby to score a
convincing win over the soldiers.
Former Antonian Krishantha Rajapakse who operated from the base of
the scrum had an excellent game and scored three splendid tries. Last
year’s Antonian and Sri Lanka Under 20 winger Kusal Rankothge too
impressed with his powerful runs down the flank and touched down twice.
The other player to impress was former Kingswoodian Eranda Weerakkody
who collected a kick ahead by a Army defender and kicked ahead and
collected the ball on the follow through and ran 40 metres to fall over
for a glorious try and also added the extra points to four tries which
gave him a personal tally of 13 points. With this win Kandy SC kept
their unbeaten record intact and have a six point lead over their
closest rivals CR and FC.
Havelocks in grand win
Havelocks Sports Club which is enjoying one of their best seasons in
recent years beat Police by the staggering margin of 41-12 at Havelock
Park on Sunday.
After taking a 15-7 lead at the breather the Park Club went on the
rampage in the second half to add 26 more points.
Sri Lanka Sevens player and winger Wasim Thajudeen and scrum half
Dilen da Zoysa scored two tries each while prop Shafi Hassen and centre
Zakir Badurdeen also scored a try each to give the Park Club its sixth
win in eight outings and remain in third position.
CR suffer a setback
The formidable CR and FC which is aiming to regain the ‘A’ Division
League Rugby title suffered a setback when they were held to a 15-all
draw by a gallant CH and FC outfit.
The lads from Maitland Crescent after suffering three successive
defeats came up with a stupendous performance with their forwards coming
up with a sterling display to outplay the CR ‘eight’ in the loose with
Dilanka Wijesekera, Jayantha Ranaweera, Achala Perera, Wasambe Senerath,
Dinesh Sanjeewa and Sumedha Malewana giving a fiery display.
For the Red Shirts No. 8 Dushanth Lewke, Prop Shamil Mohamed and
flanker Kasun de Silva stood out but lacked the support of the rest of
the forwards.
The famed CR ‘threes’ were also kept at bay by some resolute tackling
by the CH three quarters especially centres Rushika Fernando and Shane
Dissanayake which crippled CR’s three quarter moves.
