Baby sold for Rs.8,000

Kalmunai Police on Wednesday arrested a 40-year-old mother who had sold her three-day old baby for Rs.8,000.

Two other women involved in the transaction were also taken into custody.

She has sought admission to hospital on the pretext of having a cyst in her abdomen. Doctors who subjected her to an ultrasound scan realised it was actually a baby. She delivered the baby following a caesarian operation.

On the third day of her stay in the maternity ward, she had sold the baby to the two other women.

The infant is now under the care of Kalmunai hospital staff.
