Buddhist talk

Prof. Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on “Dealing with Anger” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, June 21 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

Poson Dansala

A Poson rice dansala organised by the Oval Junction Youth Circle Borella will be held at the Borella Oval junction on June 18 forenoon. A distribution of dry food rations, clothing and school books to the needy will follow.

Mahakaruna Buddhist Society to participate in Poson events

A 50 member delegation from the Singapore Mahakaruna Buddhist Society are visiting Sri Lanka to participate in some events marking the Poson Poya.

On Sunday they attended a ceremony held at Minikivula Dickwella to mark the opening of a housing scheme where keys were handed over to 40 tsunami affected families who have been allocated houses in the new scheme.

There after the delegation will visit Anuradhapura and Mihintale to conduct Poson dansalas, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Yoga meditation

A four day Raja Yoga meditation course will be held from June 18 to 21 at the Vijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hall, Kadawatha Road, Ragama.

Lessons will be held in Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. The programme is organised by the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centres, Sri Lanka, and all the programmes of Brahma Kumaris are free of any charge.

Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony of the National Stage Drama Festival-2008 will be held at the BMICH on Friday, June 20, at 5.00 p.m. under the patronage of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.

Both Sinhala and Tamil Dramas which are in contention for awards at the festival went on stage recently at the John De Silva Memorial Theatre.

The awards are to be presented in following categories such as Best stage drama, Production, actor, actress, lighting, music direction, make-up artiste, screen play, background display etc.

The event is jointly organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs and National Stage Drama Sub-Committee.

Polgahawela gets crematorium

The Foundation stone for the proposed crematorium at Polgahawela will be laid at the Koswatte Model Forest Plantation premises by the Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon on June 21.

This project is implemented under the direction of Polgahawela PS Chairman Athula Kumara Wagalath and Wayamba Provincial Councillor Tikiri Adikari.

Awareness programme for Poson pilgrims

The Hanthana Conservation Society (HCS) of Peradeniya University will conduct a programme to make the Anuradhapura sacred area a litter free zone by educating pilgrims on the consequences of the usage of Polythene on June 18 and 19.

The HCS is a non profit University organisation, working within and outside the university on conservation and environmental issues. The Society has been planning and conducting programmes to conserve and improve the University environment such as Green Cancer project, Upper Hanthana Landscaping programme and the Shirly De Alwis memorial programme.


Books, uniforms for flood-hit students

Pupils of schools in flood affected areas in Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts will be provided with textbooks, school uniforms and exercise books by the Education Ministry.

Measures have been taken to conduct a census within the flood affected areas of the four districts Educational Services, Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said. About 20 schools in Kalutara and Matugama educational zones were damaged following to floods.

School's long wait for water a reality soon

Pupils and teachers of the Millaththeva Vidyalaya have cherished a hope of having water in the school premises in the near future.

A rural Government school off the former capital of the Mahaweli 'C' Zone Girandurukotte the Millaththeva Vidyalaya had no water facilities over the past twenty-four years, but a government funding water supply project has recently been approved for the school to be implemented at a cost of Rs. 1,485,000.
