Teacher sentenced to four years RI for bribery

Colombo High Court Judge Thilak Thabrew yesterday sentenced a teacher
of Prince of Wales College Moratuwa to four years Rigorous Imprisonment
after being convicted for accepting a bribe to admit a child to the
school.
M.M. Vijitha Laxmi was convicted for accepting Rs 10,000 from a
mother to admit her child to Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa on April
4, 2001. According to the evidence teacher has demanded the
gratification from Ranasinghe Arachchilage Chandralatha to enter her
child Geeshan Dulanjana to Grade Three of the school.
The evidence revealed that the child had been ousted from the school
three months after admission. The Court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000
and the Rs. 10000 that she accepted as a bribe was also ordered to be
paid as a fine. The Court observed that case was proved beyond
reasonable doubt. |
