Art exhibition to mark World Environment Day

To commemorate the world environment day, on June 5. W.A.Ariyasena, (Senior Lecturer, Institute of Aesthetic Studies) along with his students, Sugandhi and Ronela Edirisinghe, Purnima Abeyratne and Andrea Brito Babapulle will display their paintings at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery. The exhibition will be opened to the public from June 6 to 8.

ARIYASENA, who barely shows his age though born in 1930, is master to many artists and the three painters herein.

He studied Art under the guidance of G.D.A. Perera at the Ceylon Technical College.

He was then appointed to the staff of a Government College of Fine Arts from which he retired in 1985. Since he is a versatile individual whose youthful approach to art is shown in is paintings, he is still the current visiting lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and instructs at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies.

Mr. Ariyasena was awarded the prestigious Governor General’s Prize in 1956 at the 37th Annual Art Exhibition of the Ceylon Society of Arts for his painting titled “Red Youth”. The same prize was warded to him in 1960 at the 63rd Annual Art Exhibition for his painting titled “Where are we”.

His creativity can be seen in the designs created for the Government of “then” Ceylon, such as the crest/seal of State and the Army and Navy Crests. He himself being a symbol of authority on art, it is only appropriate that he should also make the symbol of authority in the senate mace.

Sugandhi, is adventurous to be tied down to a particular style since she is modern and experimental, her master encouraged her to try out every aspect of creativity. Therefore her experiments with colours, textures and different media, means her style is varied.

She will be displaying 25 paintings of semi abstract landscapes, “In an Artists Garden”, oils on canvas. The ideas for her abstract works are formed from a multitude of different sources: visualising and creating colour and shape from thought and emotion.

Purnima Abeyratne, a well known designer of the label Inspirations, will also be exhibiting a few landscapes and sea scapes.

Purnima finds the sea and the natural world very inspirational.

She enjoys experimenting with mixed media incorporating variety of substances into her work. The colours textures and patterns of nature are evident in her paintings. She loves to work with acrylics, that have the contrast and vibrancy that she prefers and she tends to paint dusk and dawn settings, with rays of misty atmospheric light.

Andrea is an Aquarian therefore water. She captures the sand and things of sand, water and the sea. From turbulent gusty mornings on the beach, to tranquil night seascapes and water fronts. She will display a few of her paintings to match the theme of this exhibition.

The collection of landscapes, seascapes and wild life will be displayed using mediums such as oils, acrylic, water colours, pen and ink.
