Buddhist talk

Prof. Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on “One Pointedness in Meditation” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, May 17 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

Panel discussion

The next Buddhist English public panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held on Sunday, May 18 at 10.00 a.m. at its Borella Building on “Anicca - The Vital Factor in Buddhism.” The Panellists are Prof. Raja de Alwis and Prof. Arjuna de Zoysa with Rajah Kuruppu as moderator.

AGM

Taverns, meat stalls, night clubs closed for Vesak

The Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry in a circular has ordered the closure of all taverns, liquor shops, betting shops, night clubs and casinos from May 18 to 20 and all abbatoirs and meat stalls from May 18 to 21 to mark the Vesak Week declared by the Government from May 18 to 24.

Goods train derailed

A Galle-Matara goods train derailed between Ahangama and Kataluwa area at 3.15 pm yesterday, the Sri Lanka Railways Control Room reported.

No persons were injured by the incident, said Railway controllers. Controller Arrangement, Nihal Fernandez said, the trains would ply only upto Galle until the tracks were cleared and repaired.

"Two wagons jumped off the tracks," he said.

Railway workers were restoring the tracks.
