Rightist UNP should be defeated - Vasudeva

COLOMBO: The Democratic Left Front (DLF) in a press release yesterday said the rightist and anti-people UNP should be defeated at the forthcoming Eastern Provincial Council Elections.

A release signed by DLF Secretary Vasudeva Nanayakkara said democratic forces were happy that the Government had created an environment suitable for an election in the East where its people had undergone suffering on account of the war. By doing this the Government had freed the country from imperialist pressures to a certain extent.

Launching of the Hambantota and Oluvil Port projects and the Sapugaskanda oil refinery extension and Uma Oya projects under Iranian aid without solely depending on assistance from Western Powers as well as the take over of SriLankan Airlines under Government's wing, food production drive and the price control of essential goods were all steps taken in the right direction by the Government.

The release said the Socialist People Front of which the DLF was a component would support Democratic Tamil United Front candidates in the Batticaloa district and UPFA candidates in Trincomalee and Ampara districts at the Eastern Provincial Council elections.
