Trinity skittled out for 142

Medium Pacer Fabian Leonard took 4 for 24 for St. Anthony’s College to skittle out the more fancied Trinity College for 142 on the opening day of Kandy’s 92nd Battle of the Blues which began at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 a.m.

Rain which fell around 4.45 p.m. put an early end to the day’s play which began 45 minutes late following heavy overnight rain which made ground conditions soggy.

The Anthonian skipper Gimhan Dissanayake won the toss and invited the Lions to bat. This soon proved to be a good decision as five of Trinity’s top order batsmen were back in the pavilion for 59. This included their star bat Sachith Pathirana who was caught at the wicket attempting to hook a short pitched ball for just 12.

It was left for the sixth wicket pair of Mohamed Sajid 21 (61 balls) and Rajitha Bandara 30 (1 four 107 balls to slowly to control the damage by putting on 54, to take the score past the three figure mark. But with their departure both falling to spinner Erande Hewapthirana the Trinity’s innings folded up for 142.

Medium pacer Fabian Leonard bowled well to capture 4 for 24. Heshan Ranasinghe who opened the attack took 2 for 31 supported by spinner Erande Hewapathirana taking 2 for 14. Skipper Gimhan Dissanayake took three catches.

Antonians have replied with 16 for no loss when rain stopped play and subsequently the days play was called.
