Two killed in Badulla flood havoc

Two persons were killed due to floods caused by torrential rains in Badulla while a landslide damaged two houses. Several roads were under water due to incessant rains cutting off large parts of the district while around 200 people have been displaced as a result of floods in Haputale and Passara.

A spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre told the Daily News that around seven houses were destroyed by floods in Badulla and Haputale while 161 others have been partially damaged in Badulla, Haliela, Ella and Haputale.

Two roads in Badulla have been submerged while 24 roads in Badulla, Haliela, Ella and Passara are impassable due to flood waters. Two bridges have also been totally damaged while six bridges were partially damaged in Badulla and Haliela.

Vast tracts of land in Haputale, Kandaketiya and Rideemaliyedda have been destroyed due to floods.

A landslide was reported in Badulla yesterday and two houses have been partially damaged as a result of landslides triggered by heavy rains. The spokesman said if the rains continue, the people will have to be evacuated.

He said several lands in Muttur was under water due to prevailing torrential rains and the people living in these areas have lost their paddy cultivations. He said that 1867 acres of paddy lands in Muttur have been submerged.

He said there was a landslide risk along the Suriyakanda-Deniyaya Main Road in Ratnapura. People who travel and live these areas have been warned to evacuate to safer locations.
