Lankans duped with promise of jobs, education in Singapore

The Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore has drawn attention to a number of scams carried out by unscrupulous recruitment agents who obtain large sums of money from Sri Lankans with the promise of education and employment opportunities in Singapore.

A large number of such persons have been abandoned by their agents upon their arrival in Singapore and face serious difficulties.

Many have been stranded in Singapore without food, lodging and funds and on occasions have faced penalties for overstaying their visa.

The High Commission has intervened on several occasions to assist these persons by either facilitating their return home or obtaining an amicable settlement between the two parties, where possible. Given the increasing number of Sri Lankans being duped by these agents, the High Commission warned the public against these unscrupulous agents and recommended verification of their bona fides, before making any financial commitments with respect to education and employment in Singapore.
