Past Joe-Pete captains on Josephian victory

Following are the comments made by the former captains of St.
Joseph's College and St. Peter's College after Josephians trounced the
Peterites by an innings 42 runs last weekend at P. Sara Stadium in their
annual 74th "Battle of the Saints" cricket encounter.
Fairlie Dalpethado: captained SJC in 1942-43. Former All Ceylon all
rounder and one time coach of SJC. "It was a great win. I guided Joes to
win in 1970 and 1972 and after 36 years my student Harsha. De Silva had
the honour of coaching this Champion outfit." Observed Dalpethado with a
hearty laugh.
Lalith De S. Wijayaratne: captained SJC 1968 & schoolboy cricketer
1969. "For last 36 years we were striving hard to taste this victory.
Fine allround effort by the Joes. They truly deserve this win."
Dr. Rohan Fernando : Led SJC to victory in 1972 against SPC. "This
Peterite team is far superior than the team of 1972. They had Roy Dias
and couple of other names. This is no doubt a fantastic win".
Travis Fernando: Led SPC to victory over SJC in 1965. "Toss too
played a vital role. But that does not decide the fate of the match.
Joes completely out played the Petes in this encounter in every
department of the game."
Bernard Wijayatunga: led SPC in 1975; "Petes never played according
to their potential. Fine team effort by the Josephians."
Roshan Antony: led SPC in 1989; "it was poor cricket by Petes. They
dissappointed their fans. They did not show any fighting qualities to
give a good run to marauding Josephians. It's a memorable win for Joes
which they truly deserve." |
