Weerasekara moves into quarter finals

Seeded number eight Guyanaga Weerasekara was the only Sri Lankan to reach the quarterfinals of the boys events while top seed Jithmie Jayawickrame, Shenalie Weerasekara, Amritha Muttiah and Nilupul Goonasekara cruised into the girls quarterfinals of the ongoing 25th International Tennis Federation Junior Championship played at SSC, courts, yesterday.

Shenalie created a major upset when she beat seeded number five Indian Susitha Das (6/4,6/1) in the previous match.

Sri Lankan born Michael Siyaguna now representing Australia was another player who cruised into the next passage of the boys tournament.

Seeded number three Lankan player Dineshkanthan Thangarajah went down to unseeded Marcus Chee of Malaysia (6/3,6/2) which was the other sensation of the day.

Seed number seven Nilupul Goonasekara chalked out a good victory after going down in the first set to her Malaysian opponent S. Theiviya which lasted more than one and half hours, but made a strong comeback to win the other two sets easily to take the match in favour of her (4/6,6/3,6/2).

The results: (boys) Guyanaga Weerasekara beat Crisp-Jones 6/1, 6/2, Michael Siyaguna beat Jaisal Kohil Mariwala (India) 6/2, 6/3, Kriangkrai Prajoubphans (Thailand) beat Shehan Gomesz 6/2, 6/4, Rytoto Tachi (Japan) beat Amresh Jayawickrame 6/2, 6/1, S. Jriangkrai (Thailand) beat Yasas Dewage 6/4, 6/4.

(girls): Kemali Herath beat Roshenka Fernando 6/2,6/2, Shwetha Rana (India) beat Vaidehi Bhagwat 6/1,6/1, S. Weerasekara beat Sushitha Das (India) 6/4,6/1, Minami Hashizvme (Japan) beat Boey Adelle (Malaysia) 6/1,6/2, Nilupul Goonasekara beat Theiviya Sevarajoo (Malaysia) 4/6,6/3,6/2, Amritha Muttiah beat Sherene Wijesinghe 6/0,6/1, Yoko Nagai (Japan) beat Kemali Herath 6/1, 7/6 (3).
