Heavy fines on SP traffic offenders

The Southern Province Police Emergency Motor Cycle Unit collected Rs. 127,796,300 as fines by taking legal action against 174,112 traffic offenders last year, OIC Y.L. Leelawansa said.

He said this at a meeting at the unit's Galle Fort Office to appreciate the services by the unit and grant special rewards to its personnel. DIG (Southern Province) Jayantha Gamage presided.

Leelawansa said the number of offenders rounded up under some of the categories of offences were driving under the influence of liquor 354, excessive speeding 31,211, wrong overtaking 25,663 and overtaking disregarding obstructors 12,992.

A batch of 127 police personnel deployed on 83 motor cycles, supported by four patrol cars conducted the raids from Bentota to Kataragama directed by DIG (Southern Province) Jayantha Gamage.
