Security enhanced in buses

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has initiated a programme to
enhance security in 4,000 buses attached to the Inter-Provincial
Passenger Service to provide a safe ride to commuters.
The programme is also aimed to supervise the bus service to be
implemented under the prevailing rules and regulations in Sri Lanka.
NTC Chairman Prof. Ama Kumarage said under this special programme,
4,000 buses will be checked. Officials will check seats, sound level,
cleanliness and other essentials required for passenger comfort.
"If there are mistakes we will give them time to correct it, he said.
The main objective is to implement the Inter-Provincial Passenger
Service under the country's rules and regulations. It has an targeted to
increase the safety and comfort of commuters, Kumarage said.
He said the NTC has also not taken a decision to remove religious
symbols and other decorations in buses.
"Recent newspaper article which the NTC had decided to remove Buddha
statue from buses is incorrect."
A form has to be filled by bus inspectors on the results of the
checking process. This decision of conducting the checking process have
been taken after discussions with organisations and societies
representing bus owners islandwide. |
