A move to protect traditional cultural heritage

The Cultural Arts Heritage "PRAVENI 2006-2007" organised by the
Department of Cultural Affairs for the presentation of Awards and
certificates for singing, playing and dancing competitions and a
cultural pageant was held at John de Silva Memorial Theatre on 7th
February.

The competition among 800 " kalayathana" registered under the
Department of Cultural Affairs aimed to protect our traditional cultural
singing and dancing to appreciate talented artistes in the field. The
event was to promote and build up local cultural arts heritage.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena who along
with Minister of Highways T. B. Ekanayake were present as guests of
honour said, "The Government's programme under the "Mahinda Chinthanaya"
was to protect our national heritage, especially our traditional
dancing, singing, and heritage.

And traditional artistes have maintained our artistic heritage for a
long time. We want to promote our cultural items to the world".
"When foreigners see our traditional dancing or hear our traditional
music they enjoy it over and over again. Because of our traditional
dancing, music and melody, Sri Lanka is known in many corners of the
world, he added.

Some people go with pop music and hard music. But our cultural items
have more depth and inner peace for the soul.
