COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Inter-University Food and Technological Association has started a very important programme relevant to the progress of the country, said Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama.

He was opening the website related to the Inter-University Food Sciences and Technology.

We need an institute, which conducts research regarding food production technology. And we have to provide our fullest co-operation for this programme, which is being implemented regarding that, the Minister said. He said, the Ministry should create new things with new technology and each person who does so would be assisted.

“We gave Rs. 40 million to the Moratuwa University to buy a new machine for new product planning. Action has been taken to start courses to get modern technological knowledge for its industrial sector,” Welgama said.

Additional Secretary R.V.D. Piyathilake said the Inter-University Food Production Technological Association was looking for an opportunity to introduce the programme, which has been in existence for some time.

At this time it was able to put a successful foundation required for a long journey by connecting to the Pro-Food Pro-Pack programme initiated by Industrial Development Ministry.

Today the objective of opening this website is to introduce food sciences and technical knowledge and uses to the local food manufacturing and processing industry and thereby uplifting its productivity and quality and to create a Sri Lanka self-sufficient in food.
