All time opening record

The St. Joseph’s College openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Ruwantha Fernandopulle established an all time Josephian record against Trinity College by putting on 263 runs in their annual encounter played at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy last week.

The pair surpassed the previous record for the first wicket against Trinity College which was 174 runs put on by Ephrem Fernando (135 n.o.) and “Willie” Wimalaratne (80) in 1951 thus erasing a 57 year old record.

The all time record against Trinity College was 211 for the fourth wicket between Neil Weerasinghe (111) and Hubert Bagot (95) in 1947 surpassing a 61 year record.

They also surpassed the all time record partnership for St. Joseph’s College between Viran Perera (124) and Dyan Morris (111) 249 runs vs St. Anthony’s College Wattala in 1989. and the first wicket partnership of 216 runs between Ravi de Silva and Ashley de Silva against Prince of Wales in 1982. Thomians play Joesfrom today

The annual 104th interschool cricket encounter between St. Joseph’s and S. Thomas will be played today and tomorrow at Mt Lavinia. The captains will be Ruwantha Fernandopulle (SJC) and Jehan Tahir (STC, ML).

SJC will miss Roshane Silva and Thisara Perera and the Thomians Nizam Mazahir.

The Joes lead the tally of wins with 24 and the Thomians 17. The rest have been drawn. The Joes last won under Monto Perera. The last Thomian victory was recorded in 1995 under Nilanka Peiries. SP


Past Cricketers meeting

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have invited all past national cricketers for a discussion with regard to development of Sri Lanka Cricket to be held today at the SLC headquarters at 5.00 p.m.


Entries called for FA Cup

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka intends to conduct the FA Cup Championship - 2008. Entries for the same will close on 10th March 2008. Entry forms could be obtained from Football Federation or through the respective Leagues in the Districts.
