Army Commander visits Yala

On the heels of unfolding security concerns in the country's deep south, following the massacre of innocent civilians on Wednesday, a top level team, headed by Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka flew to Yala area yesterday morning.

A special round of discussions centred on current security arrangements in place in surrounding villages got under way with the participation of Area Commander for Yala and Hambantota Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe, Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickramarathna, Commander, Civil Defence Forces Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara and a representative gathering of senior Police and Army officers where current developments were reevaluated.

The Army Commander instructed relevant authorities to take further precautionary measures to prevent recurrence of Tiger infiltration into jungle areas. The visiting retinue inspected a few sensitive areas before the end of the tour.
