Condensed version of Thripitaka handed over to PM

The Conference of Mahasangha on Drafting Condensed Versions of the Thripitaka from original Pali Buddhist canons to Sinhala, handed over their work of simplified Sinhala Thripitaka editions, to Prime Minster Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka on Saturday.

The President of the Sangha Conference on preparing the texts and the Mahanayaka of Dharma Raskshitha Maha Nikaya, Most Ven. Weligama Gnanarathana Thera handed over the editions to Prime Minister Wickremanayaka at the Prime Minister's Office.

The President of the Sangha Conference on Drafting Condensed Versions of Pali Thripitaka texts and the Mahanayaka Thera of the Dharma Rakshitha Maha Nikaya, Most Ven. Weligama Gnanarathana Thera hands over concised Sinhala Translations of their completed work on Sutra Pitaka, to Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka.

The texts have been translated into simple Sinhala from unabridged Pali canons based on the Buddha Jayanthi Thripitaka Volumes.

The Mahananayaka Theras said they have translated the texts of Digha Nikaya , Majjhima Nikaya, Samyuttha Nikaya and the Anguttara Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka.

It has also been revealed that of the 15 sub sections of the Khuddhaka Nikaya, five sections have been completed. The theras pointed out that there were some books in Sinhala published by persons who have little or no knowledge about Buddhism writing on the subject, that misinterpret the Buddha's Teachings.

The Theras emphasised the importance of introducing a system that will minimise these errors on a firm footing. They pointed out that some youth have become addicted to these books in simple Sinhala with substandard context and therefore have learnt untruth.

The monks said these books could lead to complications and the affected will be the next generation.

Prime Minister Wickremanayaka said he was prepared to take steps to ensure the longevity of the Buddha Sasana provided that the Mahasangha lead the way for such action.
