Area leaders among 18 LTTEers killed

In a series of attacks 18 LTTE cadres were killed including an area intelligence deputy leader and area leaders in Trincomalee, Wanni and Jaffna yesterday and Monday.

Three LTTE bunkers were also destroyed and arms and weapons recovered by the Security Forces following the confrontations, the Media Centre for the National Security said.

According to military sources, a group of armed LTTE cadres launched an attack targeting a Security Forces route clearing patrol on Monday at around 9.30 p.m. in the general area of Iluppukkulam, Trincomalee.

"The Security Forces successfully repulsed the attack killing four Tiger cadres including Kumudan, the LTTE deputy intelligence leader of the area", the sources added.

Following the incident, troops recovered three T56 assault riffles, nine magazines, 250 T56 ammunition, a pistol, a magazine with nine ammunition, a radio set, a cyanide capsule and two dog tags.

Meanwhile, Security Forces thwarted an LTTE attempt to breach the Muhamalai FDL's yesterday morning killing three Tigers. "Troops successfully retaliated following the LTTE attack and completely destroyed three LTTE bunkers", a spokesman for the MCNS said.

According to the MCNS spokesman, soldiers launched an attack targeting LTTE hideouts located in Umayarattuwaramkulam, Vavuniya yesterday.

"The fight erupted at 12.00 noon and continued until 1.50 pm. The Security Forces successfully launched the attack using small arms and RPG. Four Tiger cadres were killed in the incident and a soldier too sustained injuries", he added.

In another incident, a group of LTTEers attempting to infiltrate the Forward Defence Lines in Sirinavakulam, Mannar was driven back by the Security Forces killing two Tiger cadres yesterday at around 4.00 a.m., a spokesman for the MCNS said.

In a subsequent search operation troops recovered two LTTE bodies along with two T56 assault riffles and dog tags.

Meanwhile, he said advancing Security Forces in the Muhamalai FDL's destroyed three LTTE bunkers and killed five Tigers including a leader on Monday morning.

"The Security Forces overran the first bunker line of the LTTE in Muhamalai in a surprise attack and later destroyed three other bunkers on Monday at around 5.00 a.m. Soldiers were able to maintain domination in the area for an hour and returned to their defence line", he added.

The LTTE transmission intercepts revealed that an LTTE leader known as Kadir Neelawan was among the killed.
