Doctor raped and pushed patient to death

A 22-year-old woman chloroformed, raped and pushed from the fourth floor of the Negombo Hospital on Monday evening succumed to her injuries at the Ragama Hospital, a Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.

An MBBS doctor serving at the Negombo hospital has been taken into custody by Negombo police in connection with the incident, the spokesman said.

He said the chloroform found in the doctor's room and his quarters have been sealed for judicial medical investigations. It is alleged that the doctor has been accused of two previous similar murders.

The woman was not an in house or OPD patient at the hospital. The inquest had revealed that the woman had been chloroformed and raped before being pushed from the building. Wards at the Negombo Hospital are on the first, second and third floors while the doctors' quarters are on the fourth and fifth floors.

Negombo police are investigating.
