Modern humans have emplaced "Art for art's sake" with art for the
sake of human and society, and all fine arts, paintings and drawings
have symbolised the Lankan culture since antiquity. Our artistic
tradition, which boasts of a long and fruitful history, has evolved
through the influence of various socio-political changes.
Painting occupies a significant place in the arts stream of the
school curriculum. It not only developed the students' attitude but also
shapes their observation faculties.
Thamara Damayanthi, invites art lovers to view a new social review
with 'Vivarana - 2007'. Based on the statement 'Art depicts a layer of
society', this year's exhibition focuses on honouring our soldiers. It
has been entitled "Gratitude to our gallant servicemen some gave some
and some gave all."
Advanced Level students of the "Siththaraneni" Arts Forum of Ananda
College, Colombo 10 will present their artistic creations for this
exhibition.
Sri Lankans have many memories of this decades-old war. We had
sacrifice humans as well as property. Yet the most tragic effect of the
war is the people's attitudes were eroded. Terror, corruption, and other
evils have embedded into our daily life.
But there is now a glimmer of hope; the war is showing signs of
coming to an end due to the efforts of the Security Forces. With lives
of those displayed by war being restored to pristine order, the
situation is indeed bright.
The soldier plays a pivot role in this restoration. And the attitudes
of society towards him has never been more respectful. He is viewed with
pride and warmth. The soldiers deserve the whole nation's tribute as
they are ready to sacrifice their lives for our Motherland's unity,
laying aside all their personal desires and wishes.
Vivarana - 2007 has been dedicated to our soldiers to spread the
massage of their humanity. The main intention of this exhibition is to
make the whole student body to pay respect and honour our warriors.
It also depicts the compassion, deep humanity and patience that are
within the armed soldier. Staying true to "Art review society" Thamara
Damayanthi has managed to guide her students in paying tribute to
soldiers.
The majority of paintings are in watercolour, and depict the various
services of soldiers. Mrs. Thamara Damayanthi's aim has been to use the
craftsmanship, she has acquired, to the maximum and provides all fans of
good art with a novel experience.
Vivarana - 2007 is sponsored by the Ranaviru Seva Authority. It will
be held from November 13 to 16 at the National Art Gallery.
