2.3m coconut seedlings to be planted

COCONUT Cultivation Board (CCB) Chairman Jayantha Gunatilake said 2.3
million coconut seedlings will be planted in 20,000 acres of land before
the end of this year.
Gunatilake said the coconut production target for next year will be
3,500 million nuts.
CCB has decided to increase production of coconut allied products
next year, parallel to the Gama Neguma project launched under the
Mahinda Chinthana concept, he said.
Arrangements have been made to hold the Home Garden Coconut
Cultivation Programme on October 14 at Polgolla, Ibbagamuwa under Prime
Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake’s patronage.

Negombo Bharatha Association, AGM awards ceremony
THE 81st Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony of the Negombo
Bharatha Association will be held on Saturday, October 20 at 6.45 p.m.
at the Ranvil Hall Keells Building, Colombo Road, Negombo.
It will be followed at 8.00 p.m. by an Awards Ceremony, where there
outstanding Young Achievers will be felicitated. They are Miss Himaya
Fernando, Miss Druvinka Croos. Moraes, and Dimitri Mascaren has (the
England cricketer).
Awards will also be presented to four senior past and present ex-co
members in recognition of their dedicated service to the Association.
They are, Solicitor and Attorney-at-Law, Gaston R. De Vaz, Past
Lions’ District Governor and J.P. O’Regan Pinghe, Ex-M.M.C. Negombo and
J.P, Mrs. Sabina Miral, and Cedric Villavaranan P.S. Soosaithasan,
Former MP for Mannar, Chartered Accountant will grace the occasion.

Sri Lankan Youth Wins CIPE International Essay Competition
The Center for International Private Enterprise is pleased to
recognize Manilka Leanage of Sri Lanka at the third place winner of its
2007 International Essay Competition, in the category ‘Educational
Reform and Employment Opportunities.’ The competition asked young people
aged 18-30 to share their ideas about youth’s role in democratic and
market-oriented reform.
------------------- Protest against quarry
Workers of May field estate, Hatton last week protested against a
quarry near their residences operated by Talwakelle Upper Kotmale Hydro
Power Project (UKHP) contractors.
They lodged a complaint with Dimbula police stating that their lives
and properties are in danger by the blasting of rocks.
At the police inquiry, authorities said they blast the rocks with
Government permit for the UKHP project. They agreed to reduce the
velocity of the blast ensuring public security.

War Remembrance Day
The Kandy Ex-Servicemen’s Association (KESA) will conduct a
commemoration service and parade in connection with the War Remembrance
Day in kandy on November 11. The service and parade will take place at
8.00 a.m. opposite the Cenotaph at the George E. de Silva Park.

Graduation ceremony
The graduation ceremony, jointly organized by the City and Guilds
(London) Institute and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers, Sri
Lanka, will be held at the BMICH Committee Room “B” on October 17 at
1.p.m.
