COLOMBO: The National Congress (NC) yesterday declared that it
would force the Government to go for a general election at the earliest
opportunity.
Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the media said that
the NC would combine forces irrespective of ideological differences to
uphold the people’s supremacy, in the face of Government’s failure to
deliver on many fronts.
He said that the NC would launch awareness campaigns and protest
campaigns starting at grassroots level throughout the country while
adding that the intention was to topple the Government as soon as
possible.
MP Mangala Samaraweera said that in the short span of three months
since its inception, the NC had been able to create a big impact in the
Sri Lankan political arena.
Predicting that the NC forming the next Government was a foregone
conclusion, Samaraweera said that the only question was when , and
hinted out that it would be sooner rather than later.
“This is not an attempt to merely grab power, but a campaign to heed
to the request of the masses in bringing out a total revolution in
politics by establishing a new political culture” Samaraweera added.
While observing that the NC would hold talks with all political
parties in view of possible alliances, Samaraweera said that the NC was
already in the process of finalising an accelerated development
programme upto 2020. |
