Ex- Josephian cricketer Senaratne dies

CRICKET: Former St. Joseph’s, Bloomfield and Sri Lanka Youth opening bowler Ranjith Senaratne died recently after a brief illness. He was a fiery right arm paceman who turned out for St. Joseph’s from 1974 to 1975 under late Gary Melder and Dushan Soza.

He also turned out for Sri Lanka Schools under late Anura Ranasinghe and shared the new ball with Susantha Karunaratne. Senaratne was responsible for the two prized scalps of the match of Pakistan youth side skipper Javed Miandad and Mudassar Nazar before Ranjan Madugalle did the damage by taking 8 wickets for 34 runs in the Ali Bhutto trophy match played at CCC, grounds in 1975.

He also excelled in soccer and athletics for his alma-mater. Later he turned out for Bloomfield under the captaincy of Bandula Warnapura.
