COLOMBO: Four Colombo Municipal Councillors including Deputy Mayor
and Opposition Leader received an opportunity to cross examine Municipal
Commissioner Dr.Jayantha Liyanage, after obtaining prior permission from
Dr. Chandradasa Nanayakkara, President of the Commission appointed to
probe alleged malpractices of the Council when Commission sittings
resumed yesterday.
“All charges submitted against the Councillors bore no relation to
them.
The real involvement lay with the CMC administration.Extracts
submitted to the council sessions cannot be termed a full report. But
items in connection with the Solid Waste Management and Rice parcel
distribution give rise to suspicion on the part of the Provincial
Council authorities”, UPFA Councillor Tony Ramzy said in a statement
during the cross examination.
“There were no roofing sheets received by the Councillors but the
officers shared the money among themselves, Ramzy said. Responding to
certain comments made by some councillors, Commission President Dr.
Nanayakkara asked them to obtain a writ order and suspend his
appointment if they are not satisfied with his decisions.
Opposition Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara will cross examine the
Municipal Commissioner at the Commission’s next sitting on Friday.
