COLOMBO: The members of Colombo Municipal Council will stage a
Satyagraha at Colombo Municipal grounds, to protest what they describe
as “possible suspension” of the council’s activities.
Municipal Council Member Hemantha Weerakoon said all members and
groups from all political parties in the Council were expected to
participate in the Satyagraha.
It will take place from 9 am to 10 am. “We request that no action be
taken to suspend the activities of the Council,” Weerakoon said.
We believe if action be taken to suspend the Council’s activities by
positioning a competent authority under emergency law to take over the
Council, this would mean a violation of our (members) democratic rights,
he said.
He alleged that action was being contemplated to take over CMC
administration by appointing six committees for the task under a
competent authority.
CMC, Members Gamini Ramya Kumara from UPFA, M.A Sherifdeen from SLMC,
R. Liyanarachchi from the Independent Group, K. Gurubaran from Western
Province People’s Front, K.T. Kurusami from Upcountry People’s Front, S.
Thirukeshwaran from CWC, R. Bogahawatta from Democratic United Front,
and Tudor Perera from Jathika Hela Urumaya will participate in the
Satyagraha. |
