ROWING: The cheers of supporters rent the air, as they lined
up alongside the Beira Lake to encourage and press their teams on, in
the 23rd rowing nationals which began on Monday and entered the third
day.
This six day contest of oarsmen/women which concludes this Saturday,
is in its halfway stage and organised and conducted by the Amateur
Rowing Association of Sri Lanka and sponsored by Mobitel for the second
year.
In the preliminaries held thus for Royal and Ananda have done well in
the junior category for events such as Single Sculls, Pairs, Double
Sculls and Coaxed Fours. In the Intermediate category Colombo Rowing
Club, Old Joes Sports Club and University of Colombo were impressive.
In the open category Fours event (coxless) the Colombo Rowing Club
and the Air Force won their respective heats.
In the Ladies category Bishops College and Ladies College stand out
amongst the Juniors. The open category finds Ladies, Bishops and Musaeus
to be the main contenders in the sculls and Fours. |
