Rs. 50m allocated for 110 Pradeshiya Sabhas

COLOMBO: The Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry has allocated Rs. 50 million for the development activities of 110 Pradeshiya Sabhas which are not in a position to generate their own funds for administrative and development activities in their regions.

A press release by the Government Information Department said 110 out of a total of 270 Pradeshiya Sabhas in the country are in a backward state and these funds are given for them to engage in infrastructure development and introduce new income generating projects.

The majority of backward Pradeshiya Sabhas are in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. According to Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennekoon rebuilding undeveloped local councils was a main objective of the National Local Government Policy.
