UNP misleading public on taxes

COLOMBO: Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said the UNP was misleading people by claiming that the Government has imposed tax on tractors, lorries, buses and three- wheelers, which is false.

Addressing the weekly press briefing held at the Government Information Department auditorium yesterday, Minister Abeywardena said that the new tax imposed by the Government will not apply to tractors, agricultural vehicle machinery, lorries, buses and three-wheelers.

The Government imposed the minimum tax with least impact on the public. But the opposition was creating a public opinion that the on going war was the reason for the high cost of living which is not true, he added.
