Two new records, one equalled on day two
Sir John Tarbat Athletic Championships:

ATHLETICS: Two new records were established and one equalled
on the second day of the 77th annual senior national athletic
championships for the Sir John Tarbat Shield which continued yesterday
at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Udara Silva of Maris Stella College Negombo equalled the existing
record of 2.70m in the boys under-18 high jump event. Charles Kingston
Raju (St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala) secured the silver medal with a
performance of 1.84m ahead of Krishan Fernando (1.84 m) who joined his
teammate, the gold medallist at the podium.
G. S. Jayasekera (Mahinda College, Galle) set up a new record with a
performance of 22.45 seconds in the boys under-18 200m final. L. K. T.
de Mel (Gateway International School) was placed second as he was 1\10th
of a second slower than the gold medallist.
W.D.L. Sharaka (22.81 secs.) of Sri Subhuthi Vidyalaya, Battaramulla
was placed third.
The only record produced in the girls championship came in the
under-18 triple jump event. P. V. Dhanushka Priyadarshani from St.
Thomas’ Balika Vidyalaya, Matara produced an effort of 11.67 metres to
set up the record.
She erased the earlier record of 11.48m.
Hiruni Weerasekera (Furgusen Balika Vidyalaya) and Anjalika
Ranathunga (St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya) were placed second and third
for their performances of 11.01 m and 10.85 m respectively.
The championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic
Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and sponsored
by Nestle Lanka Limited will conclude today. |
