Sri Lanka - Tanzania dual boxing meet on September 8

BOXING: The Tanzanian national boxing team will be touring Sri Lanka for a Dual Boxing meet for the ‘MAS Challenge Cup’ to be held on Saturday the 8th of September 2007 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

This event will mark the third successive dual meet organized by the Amateur Boxing Association in recent times following the successes of Philippines in 2005 and Vietnam in 2006. This is also the first time an African national team will be visiting Sri Lanka for a boxing tournament of this nature.

The overriding objective of organizing this dual tournament is to provide the Sri Lankan boxers with some high class international exposure in their build up to the World Boxing Championships scheduled to be held in Chicago later on this year.

The Tanzanian team is expected to provide stiff opposition to the Sri Lankans after having recently secured I silver and 3 bronze medals at the prestigious Commonwealth Boxing Championships held in Liverpool recently.

The dual meet will consist of 7 bouts ranging from 48 kg to 69 kg weight classes. The Sri Lankan team will feature some new faces with the retirement of some established pugilists recently. The winners of the recently concluded Layton Cup have been picked to represent the country at this landmark event. The line up of fights for the dual will be as follows.

48 kg (Light Fly Weight Category) - T. M. C. Tennakoon (Sri Lanka) vs Abdullah Fikiri (Tanzania)

51 kg (Fly Weight Category) - Anuruddha Ratnayake (Sri Lanka) vs Rajabu Oma Mbwana (Tanzania)

54 kg (Bantam Weight Category) - N. S. P. Silva (Sri Lanka) vs Ally (Tanzania)

57 kg (Feather Weight Category) - Kamal Sameera (Sri Lanka) vs Emiliani Patrick Polino (Tanzania)

60 kg (Light Weight Category) - R. V. A. I. Rajapakse (Sri Lanka) vs Petro Charles Mtagwa (Tanzania)

64 kg (Light Welter Fly Weight Category) - K. K. Jayasundara (Sri Lanka) vs Hashim Simon Petro (Tanzania)

69 kg (Welter Weight Category) - S. I. Kumara (Sri Lanka) vs Joseph Martin Mwaselage (Tanzania)
