Singer employees help needy elders
Fifty elders in remote areas are now able to lead a more comfortable
life thanks to the generosity of the employees of Singer Group. Twenty
of them are from remote areas in Monaragala, considered the poorest
district.
When Singer joined hands with the National Secretariat for Elders to
expand the programme to care for helpless elders, it did not anticipate
such an enthusiastic response from the employees. Within a short space
of time over half a million rupees was collected from employees at all
levels which will help the fifty elders for the next three years.
The 50 elders have been selected from seven districts from lists
obtained through Divisional Secretariats and necessary steps have
already been taken to mobilize the distribution of funds.
The assistance of Elders’ Rights Protection Officers will be obtained
by the National Secretariat in the task. A cheque for Rs 520,650 was
handed over to the Minister of Social Welfare Douglas Devananda
recently.
While thanking the Company for its gesture in spearheading the
campaign to make the project a success, the Minister appealed to other
private sector firms and organizations to assist the project.
Acknowledging the donation made by the Singer employees, Secretariat
Director Geetha- mani Karunaratne has stated that the money will be sent
in advance to the Divisional Secretariats to cover a four-month period.
The Rights Protection officers will visit the selected elders personally
and hand over the money.
Apart from the 20 elders from Monaragala, the others have been
selected from Polonnaruwa (11), Nuwara Eliya (5), Galle (5), Kandy (5)
and Anuradhapura (4).
Prior to the collection of donations from the employees, Singer
sponsored an awareness campaign in mass media to attract donors for the
Elders’ project.
“Let’s spare a thought for our helpless elderly in memory of our own
beloved ones’, was the theme of the campaign. It helped the National
Secretariat for Elders to expand the programme of assisting the elders
which remained at just 20 at the time the campaign was planned.
Singer pays special attention in helping orphaned children and elders
in the outstations through Singer branches and fashion academies by
donating requirements for children’s and elders’ homes. These include
dry rations, furnishings, electrical equipment and other daily needs.
